Deputy President of Badan Warisan, Malaysia
Mr. Laurence Loh is a graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He established his Penang design practice in 1983.
Since 1985, Laurence has expressed his concerns for the vulnerability & protection of cultural heritage and the historical built environments. From modest experiments he now excels in the field of Conservation in Malaysia, and his expertise is sought by private clients, government agencies, and international organizations.
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion conservation project, led by him, has been acknowledged as the "Most Excellent Project" in the inaugural UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Awards. In 2002, as the restoration architect in charge, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest temple in Malacca & Malaysia, won an "Award of Merit" for the UNESCO Asia Pacific 2003 Awards. UNESCO continues to include him on their panel of conservation experts for the Asia Region to act as a resource person for their comprehensive list of activities & programmes.
His practice has been recognized for its architectural excellence, and has received several PAM & Industrial Awards for repetitive residential buildings, conservation strategies, interior designs, and use of materials & technology.
Lawrence Loh is presently the Deputy President of Badan Warisan Malaysia; a member of the Penang State Heritage Committee; the Penang State Museum Board; Chairman of the Penang Art Gallery and technical advisor to the Penang Heritage Trust. He served as the PAM Northern Chapter Chairman from 1985-1987.
