Leon van Schaik studied at the Architectural Association, London. He is presently Professor of Architecture (Innovation Chair) at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
He was the recipient of the Neville Quarry Prize for Architectural Education from the Royal Architectural Institute of Australia at their 75th anniversary awards ceremony. In 2000 he was commissioner for Australia at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and was commissioner for Australia at the Rotterdam International Biennale of Architecture in 2003 and 2005.
In January 2006 he was awarded an Order of Australia, and previously in 2003 he was made a Life Fellow of the Royal Architecture Institute of Australia
From his base in Melbourne he has promoted local and international architectural culture through practice-based research. His latest books are "Mastering Architecture: Becoming a Creative Innovator in Practice", (2005) and "Design City Melbourne", (2006). In addition his writings include monographs compiled on Edmond and Corrigan, Ushida Findlay, Guilford Bell, Tom Kovac, Poetics in Architecture, The Guthrie Pavilion, The Practice of Practice, and Sean Godsell.
