Professor Shou-chien Shih holds a Ph.D from the Princeton University, USA. He was the Director of the National Palace Museum Taipei and is now a Research Fellow of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan.
In recent years, Professor Shih has been engaged in the research of the history of Chinese painting focusing on the relationship between cultural environment and change in painting style. His research results in this area were published in the book 《風格與世變》(Taipei: 允晨文化出版公司 , 1996). He has studied the role of regional development in the diversified development of Chinese painting and published case studies on Nanjing and Fujian. His interest of study also includes the interflow between Chinese and Japanese painting from the 13th to 17th Century. He has led the project on the integration and differentiation of the arts in East Asia ("東亞藝術的交融與分化") since 1998. He is currently revisiting the history of arts from a decency perspective hoping to have a different understanding of arts development since the 16th Century.
