Director, Center for Cultural Policy Research, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Desmond Hui is now Director of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research, Master of Graduate House at the University of Hong Kong, consultant and advisor to the British Council Creative Industry Unit and advisor to the UNESCO on cultural industries in Asia and the Pacific. He obtained his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University, Master and Doctor of Philosophy from University of Cambridge.
He has been awarded the Institute of International Education Scholarship, American Institute of Architects Student Certificate and Commonwealth Scholarship.
Presently member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and registered architect of Ontario, Canada (Ontario Association of Architects) and Hong Kong (Architect Registration Board and Hong Kong Institute of Architects), he has held appointment as Research Fellow of St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge, Guest Scholar at the Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal and Associate Professorship at the Department of Architecture, HKU.
Hui is Advisor for the HK Arts Development Council, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the HK Government and the HK Polytechnic University School of Design. He has been Advisor to the HK Designers' Association and has served as Adjudicator for the 2006 My Harbour Design Competition organized by the Harbour Business Forum, 2004 HK Interior Design Association Annual Awards and 2003 HK Art Biennial. He has also served as External Reviewer for the HK Research Grants Council, Accreditation Panel Member of the HK Council for Academic Accreditation and Member of the Antiquities Advisory Board of the Government.
He has directed the Baseline Study on HK's Creative Industries and Study on the Relationship between the Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong's Creative Industries (for the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR Government), A Study on Creativity Index (for the Home Affairs Bureau of the HKSAR Government) and the Planning and Strategy Study on Cultural and Creative Industries for Chaoyang District, Beijing (for the Beijing Chaoyang District Government), Public Art Research and Academic and Financial Study on West Kowloon Cultural District (for the HK Arts Development Council), Heritage and Architectural Walk Study (for the HK Tourism Association) and the Territory-wide Survey of Pre-1950 Buildings in Urban HK (for the Antiquities and Monuments Office).
His current research topics are: Consultancy on the Mapping of Creative Industries in Luwan District, Shanghai (for the British Council), A Study on the Art & Cultural Aspects of Urban Renewal Strategy for the Kwun Tong Town Centre Redevelopment Project (for the Urban Renewal Authority), Consultancy Study on the Development of Hong Kong's Film Industry (with Olsberg/SPI of UK, for the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority, HKSAR Government). His published work includes The Culture of Space (1999).
He has been invited as keynote speaker at various international conferences and is now on the Editorial Board of the Creative Industries Journal (UK: Intellect Publishing), the Executive Board of the Cultural and Creative Industries Journal of the Communication University of China, Steering Committee of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre project in Hong Kong and also Member to the Commission on Strategic Development in Hong Kong.
