Dr Ng was fascinated with popular culture from early in life and has taken a persistent interest in watching television, reading comics and listening to popular music. During his university study, he discovered the intellectual power of sociological analysis and decided to develop a career in that direction. Now he works in the university, utilizing the tools of sociology to shed light on the nature and impact of popular culture.
His teaching and research interests in recent years include popular culture, creative industries, oral history and social change. Since 2005 he has intensively worked on a research project on "James Wong and Hong Kong popular culture". His publications include the Cultural Chitchat series (3 volumes), Reading Hong Kong Popular Culture 1970-2000, Baseline Study on Hong Kong's Creative Industries, and Hong Kong, Culture, Studies.
